Are they still going?

The UK based luthier supplies seems to have everything I need. However, after I printed the catalogue to drool over at my leisure, I noticed that the site was last updated in 2004.

It's amazing how prices have changed in the last year. I can now buy stuff from the UK for the same price as ordering from the States, and only seem to be charged ?5.00 P&P...and no customs charges!!!!!!


To save other female woodworkers the usual disdain that some suppliers seem to dole out quite happily to those masculinely challenged genders seeking supplies in an apparent male dominated world (true!), and to save myself further embarrasement, can I ask this question on this wonderful and enlightened forum; has anyone been able to acquire a more recent catalogue, or are they out of business?

I sincerely hope not. David Dyke also does...*drool* veneers that I can play with and make my own purfling!!!

And he sells four or five different types of linings, including willow!!

Thanks for reading this drivel. You can tell I've been window shopping at Luthier Supplies sites for a few days now. I guess I need a coffee, now...

Sam, Yes they are still going and I buy a lot of stuff from them, I just had an order of bits in from them last week. The catalogue and prices are still roughly current, just give them a phone call and they will be most helpful to you and will cut wood to your requitements. They are a small old fashioned sort of company that don't do internet very well, but they do great service and are always willing to go the extra mile. They even do neck stock in thicker sections especially for those of us that want to do V-jointed necks.

They are a great company to deal with Sam, they have been going for ever and what they don't know about wood is not worth knowing.

I had a feeling that they were really good from the online catalogue, and would have been mightily disappointed if they had gone out of business.

Such variety! I'm there thinking..."I wonder whether I could get this or that under the same roof", and David Dykes seem to have it all.

Sam one thing that you mentioned is the linings, that's just what they are solid linings unkerfed. They sell a lot to the classical guitar builders, but I have used the willow liners, just cut my own kerfing.

Other good suppliers over here are Touchstone, and Timberline. Timberline doesn't have a tonewood catalogue, but they supply great wood.

I dunno....There's a real charm to suppliers by word-of-mouth....it's kinda refreshing. It's like discovering treasure!

I've got some wood from Dyke, But be careful, set aside half a day for the phonecall!!!

Really nice guy, According to Sam Irwin he started as a luthier and just got out of hand buying wood for himself, so ge got some for a pal, and before you know it he's the best tonewood supplier in the UK!!

You got it right Martin! But that's just because they try to get everything exactly right. When I get brace wood from them I can specify not only species and size but grain width and colour as well, and you know they'll hunt it down in their stash. Great place to visit by the way, I'm only about an hour from them. You want some interesting wood for rosette, they'll search their offcuts and send them to you. Great company.

I gave them a ring at work today, talked to a chap who is working on the website, apparently there may be a new one up and running around Christmas.

REALLY nice chap. Had a slight Welsh accent.

There's been a 10% rise in the 2004 prices. That ain't gonna put me off though. That place sounds like Luthier's heaven!!
